Largest online encyclopedia of physics, math and computing

February 21, 2020 - Reading time: ~1 minute

In 2020, HandWiki (https://handwiki.org/) has become the largest online wiki encyclopedia of natural sciences and computing. It has more than 105,000 scholarly articles, incorporating the current Wikipedia articles on many research topics, scholarly articles submitted to the Wikipedia foundation, and various wiki books.

For example, the current number of Wikipedia articles on physics is about 12,200 (Jan 2020). In addition to these articles, HandWiki includes about 700 other articles (sourced from different publishes, plus the original articles). Unlike Wikipedia, the articles are structured by the research topic and publication type. One can also add monographs and research books using various types of licenses.

HandWiki includes a quite decent (but not perfect) converter of Wikicode (MediaWiki) articles to the LaTeX format for journal publication, and an author control. The latter can be used for real-time collaboration on paper drafts, similar to the paid version of Overleaf. This can be done using the following workflow: define team members who can modify a draft, protect it from accidental modifications by others, agree on the final article content, and convert it to the LaTeX format for final publication.
