Shanghainese is spoken by some 14 million people, primarily in the central districts of Shanghai, China and its surrounding region. A variety of Wu Chinese, Shanghainese is most closely related to, but not mutually intelligible with, other Sinitic languages, including Yue, Hakka, and Mandarin. Historically a lingua franca of Yangtze River Delta region, Shanghainese has long doubled as a written language, primarily through Chinese characters; however, a Romanization was developed in the 1800s.
