Luma Health is a San Francisco -based software company providing Healthcare IT solutions for the health care industry. The company’s focus is developing a web-based patient engagement platform which enables a text-first communication between health care providers and patients, referral management, and web scheduling.[1][2][3]

History

Luma Health was founded as a privately held company in 2015 by Aditya Bansod, Tashfeen Ekram, and the current CEO Adnan Iqbal.[1][2][3][4]

In February 2017, the company was issued a convertible bond of $3.37 million.[2][5] In the following year, Luma Health raised $6.33 million in Series A funding.[2][3][6][7] Series B round of funding reached $16 million and was led by Peak Span Capital with participation from U.S. Venture Partners, as well as Cisco Systems and the Texas Medical Center.[8][9][10][11][12][13]

In 2018, the Luma Health was estimated to have a network of approximately 2.8 million patients, rising to 7.5 million by August 2019.[3][8][9]

In 2019, the company entered a partnership with the health care software company Epic Systems. Later the same year Luma Health initiated electronic health record integration with Athenahealth’s marketplace and Nextech Systems.[3][8] Overall, Luma Health works with over 300 healthcare organizations across the U.S., including 70 electronic health record and practice management systems such as Allscripts, Centricity, CareCloud, eClinicalWorks and Meditech Greenfield.[3][6][8] The company is also partnered with the health care transportation service Uber Health and teamwork app Cisco Webex.[3][6][8]

Its system was adopted by Lake Washington Physical Therapy which said it had helped them optimize the number of patients their therapists can see in a day.[14]

Healthcare platform

The Luma Health platform is cloud-based and HIPAA-compliant, able to facilitate appointment reminders, patient scheduling, referrals, feedback management, provider to patient communications, waitlist management, and the automation of capturing patient data such as intake and pre-qualification forms.[1][3]

The platform was initially launched as a smart-waitlist software aiming to connect patients with appointments, but has since been gradually expanded into a multi-purpose Heatlhcare IT service.[9] In April 2018, Luma Health added Care Pathway Messaging to their platform – a two-way communication chatbot designed to provide patients with information about their condition and offer individual guidelines – such as notifications about exam preparations and pre-procedure medication. The bot also engages in follow-ups after appointments and exams, asking the patient questions about their wellbeing post-procedure and appointment.[9][15][9]

In September 2018, the platform was further expanded with the addition of Custom Audience Broadcasts (individual and group messages from health care providers), Collaboration Hub (for clinical messaging and health care team virtual collaboration), and mobile insurance card uploads (online insurance validation through image capture).[16]
