JPEGmini is a desktop application for Mac and Windows designed to reduce the file size of images and videos with limited quality reduction.[1][2][3] The Photo Optimization program was developed by Beamr and was released in 2012.
Background
Beamr was founded by Sharon Carmel, an entrepreneur with a background in image and video processing.[4] Beamr’s clients include companies like Netflix, Viacom CBS, and Snapfish. Its technology is backed by 53 internationally granted patents and was awarded a Technology and Engineering Emmy in 2021.[5] [6] This technology is integrated into JPEGmini Pro allowing users to reduce the file size of their photos and videos with limited quality reduction. JPEGmini technology is built around a perceptually aligned image quality measure, which reliably determines the maximum amount of compression which can be applied to each individual image or video frame without introducing visible artifacts. This engine does the image transformation and generates an output that complies with all standards when paired with encode and decode blocks. With the use of this technique, JPEGmini Pro may reduce JPEG picture quality by up to 80%, or 5 times, while minimizing visual imperfections in digital photos.

- Image optimization: JPEGmini can significantly reduce the file size of JPEG images by up to 80% without compromising image quality. JPEGmini optimizes high-res photos, with a resolution of up to 120MP.
- Video optimization: The release of JPEGmini 3.3 brought the additional feature of video optimization. JPEGmini can reduce videos by up to 50% while maintaining original quality and playability. JPEGmini video supports high bitrate videos, H.264/AVC video tracks, AAC audio tracks in MP4, M4V or MOV containers, with files up to 800 Mbps.[7]
- HEIC to JPEG support: .HEIC (High Efficiency Image Format) is an image format that was adopted by iPhones but not all devices, browsers, and applications support it. JPEGmini launched a free website in 2017 that allowed the conversion of HEIC images to JPEGs, (https://heictojpg.com). With its wide popularity, JPEGmini implemented the support into its software, allowing the batch processing of .HEIC files to optimized JPEG files.
- Resizing Configurations: JPEGmini includes resizing configurations that allow users to resize batches of images and videos all at once. JPEGmini provides a range of predefined image sizes, as well as the ability to define specific dimensions.
- Plugins for image manipulation tools: JPEGmini Pro Suite is a package that includes the desktop version of JPEGmini Pro with additional plugins for Adobe© Lightroom, Capture One© and Adobe© Photoshop.
- Platforms: JPEGmini is compatible with both Mac and Windows operating systems.
Versions
Since its initial release in 2012, JPEGmini has undergone several updates and releases. In 2020, the company released JPEGmini Pro 3, with support for video files HEIC to JPEG optimization and custom resizing.
