History:

Dr Valerie Lynch studied computing and mathematics and completed her PhD at Cambridge University in management and software.[1] During the course of her career at Gould Electronics, she led the systems programming department before moving to technical computing, where she learned about digital telecom exchanges.[2] She founded AND Software based on her experiences with microcontrollers, and opened the first office in the London Docks in 1980.[3][4][5] AND Technology Research has been working in the connected devices space since 1980.[6]

In the 80's the company has successfully delivered, among others, the Bookshop - a computer system designed a sales tool for the bookselling businesses, or the Microseal - an electronic security seal developed to use on delivery vehicles. [7][8][9][10]The central office was moved to Theydon Bois, Epping in 1987.[11] In 1990 AND Software has created a software in collaboration with Toshiba developed a low-cost test and debug monitor for Hitachi's H400 series of 4bit microcontrollers.[12][13][14][15] On the 1st of March 2002 the company changed their name to AND Technology Research Ltd to reflect on the change that the scope of projects has undertaken encompassing all stages of high tech product development from initial specification and product definition through design to prototype construction and assessment.[16]

Dr Nicola Thorn has served as CEO of AND Technology Research Ltd since 2020, following 3 years of service as an executive engineer.[17][18] Former CEO, and Founder of AND, Dr Valerie Lynch undertook a new role as ‘Chairman of the Board’, whilst still maintaining an active role within the company’s development, direction, and approach to purpose-led innovation.[19][20]

Innovations and Achievements

After winning their 1st award for Business in 1986, AND was the first SME to achieve TickIT BS5750 Standard in 1992, and followed this with their maiden Technology award shortly after, in 1997.[21][22] Halogen Active Lighting that provided intelligent lighting control to individual lamps developed by AND won a DTI Smart Award in August 1997.[23] In 1998 AND Software won £25,000 from the Information Society to develop Prodesk - a new virtual reality software package enabling new products to be designed and evaluated in a virtual, three-dimensional environment on a PC screen.[24] In 1999 AND Software was nominated in the environmentally aware category for its prototype of the Halogen Active Lighting System.[25] One year later, Dr Valerie Lynch was awarded the outstanding businesswoman category at the Epping Forest Business Excellence Awards. AND Technology celebrated 25 years by hosting a series of technology seminars and begun developing in wireless based smart technology in 2008, namely WiFi, LoRA and Bluetooth based modules.[26] This work led to the eventual development of their proprietary modular software platform, c2.[27][28] In 2020 AND Technology Research Ltd. was a finalist for the Federation of Small Businesses Business and Product Innovation Award.[29]

AND Technology Research Ltd has delivered over 350 projects; from the first-ever holographic imaging solution in surgical care to life-saving equipment for firefighters; from remote blood cell counting device to a movement sensing insole.[30][31][32][33][34] AND Technology partners with major semiconductor manufacturers such as Renesas and Microchip at all stages of product lifecycle, from design and testing, through to manufacture and commercialisation.[35][36][37][38][39] They are also a chosen design partner for major electronics distributors, such as Anglia and Arrow.
