A valerate compound is a salt or ester of valeric acid. It is also known as pentanoate. The valerate anion is C4H9COO− (valeric acid minus one hydrogen ion H+).
Many steroid-based pharmaceuticals, for example ones based on betamethasone or hydrocortisone, include the steroid as the valerate ester. Betamethasone valerate has shown potential to treat vitiligo.[1]
