Lotus jacobaeus (names: Cape Verde lotus, Sant'Iago lotus, Santiago lotus and the Santiago Island lotus) is a species of lotus flowering plant that belongs to the Fabaceae family. The species is endemic to Cape Verde.
The species is named after the island which it was first founded, Santiago Island.
The plant was first known when the islands were being inhabited. It was described by Carolus Linnaeus in 1753 in the second volume of Species Plantarum.[1]
Description
Its petals are coloured black.
Distribution
The species is found in Cape Verde, including the islands of Boa Vista, Sal, Santiago, Santo Antão, São Nicolau and São Vicente and is grown on sandy areas.[2]
