Juniperus phoenicea turbinata is a subspecies of Juniperus phoenicea, a conifer that grows in the south of the Iberian Peninsula, in the Canary Islands and in the Balearic Islands. Some synonyms are Juniperus turbinata[1] or Juniperis phoenicea canariensis (A.P.Guyot in Mathou & A.P.Guyot) Rivas-Mart., Wildpret & P.Pérez.[2][3]

Characteristics

It is a shrub or tree up to 8 m high, with adult scale-like leaves, more or less triangular and pressed together to the twigs. Cones usually terminal, globular, bluish-black at first and turning dark red as they mature.

Taxonomy

Juniperus phoenicea subsp. turbinata was described by (Guss.) Parl. and published in Annales des Sciences Naturelles; Botanique, sér. 3 17: 291. 1852.[4]

Etymology

Juniperus: generic name from Latin iuniperus, given to the juniper.[6]

phoenicea: epithet Latin which means "red, crimson", perhaps in reference to the color of the fruit.
