Sometimes simply called streamer tube , these are detectors based on the principle of operation in a high electric field, close to the point of breakdown ( Hepb img54.gif Gaseous Detectors, Operational Modes). Each detector element is made of a resistive cathode in the form of a (round or square) tube, with a thick (0.1 mm) anode wire in its axis. Such detectors can be produced with 1-2 cm diameter, at moderate cost, and are robust with respect to operating conditions, and hence are reliable (see Battistoni79, Jonker83).
